Frank Lloyd Wright

Frank Lloyd Wright is considered the greatest American architect, and his designs were an inspiration, among others, for the Mies van der Rohe, a representative of an international style, but Wright himself did not identify himself with this style and not shared fascination with the art of functionalist architecture. Louis Sullivan, known as the first truly American architect, was Frank Lloyd Wright`s mentor with his message of “form follows function”. Sullivan`s philosophy became the starting point for the organic theory of Frank Lloyd Wright, who treated form and function as one. Drawing on his passion for nature, not focused on a single style because, he believed that every building should arise from the environment. He left the architectural tradition as an artificial creation and bowed toward the universal tradition- nature. Wright was also inspired by Taoist philosophy, which emphasizes the relationship between man and space in which he lives.

The most well-known works of Wright, many of which are icons of modern architecture, include: the Fallingwater House, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, Robie House in Chicago, Unity Temple in Oak Park or the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo.
